SPOTLIGHT – OUR EDITORIAL
More people die from unclean water than from all forms of violence, including war, Water is one of the most important needs of living things. It is second only to the air we breathe. In fact, some scientists believe that all life began in water.
If this is so, it may be that living things exist or have existed because of water.
During 1971-2008 it was recorded that contaminated water bodies were the main cause of death in the USA. These Analyses of the causes of disease outbreaks associated with contaminated drinking water in the United States have helped inform prevention efforts at the national, state, and local levels. This makes this issue a social problem that must be addressed to be solved by other nations and continents.
Our bodies use water in all its cells, organs, and tissues to help regulate its temperature and maintain other bodily functions. Luckily for living things, there is affordable access to water almost everywhere. But how safe is it, is the big question to ask.
So, why are people dying because of drinking water?
Even though water is essential to our being we need to treat it before drinking.
Some communities in West Africa and the Asian worlds especially die every day because of water.
These deaths are an affront to our common humanity and undermine the efforts of many countries to achieve their development potential, Our growing population’s need for water for food, raw materials, and energy is increasing, hence competing with nature’s own demands for water to sustain already imperiled ecosystems and the services on which we depend.
Water can be contaminated therefore Drinking water must be treated to kill or inactivate any pathogenic micro-organisms such as viruses, bacteria, and parasites, to remove inorganic and organic trace contaminants which have found their way into the water system because of pollution and to reduce the naturally occurring organic compounds.
Human activity over the past 50 years is responsible for unprecedented pollution, and the quality of the world’s water resources is increasingly challenged, as recorded by UN on World Water Day.
In general, surface waters such as lakes and rivers contain higher levels of micro-organisms and are more prone to contamination than groundwater and require different treatment regimes. To reduce the risk to individuals, the government has to provide a good source of drinking water and also give more education on the use and treatment of water and in addition laws must be enforced to keep individuals who pollute the water bodies to stop.
Some water-related diseases include: Cholera, Fever, Bilharzias and Malaria
These diseases mentioned can be prevented if we treat our water bodies well and not contaminate our source of drinking water. Look at it this way, drinking contaminated water is the main cause of diarrheal disease. Domestic hygiene is at least as important as the quality of the drinking water therefore if we start treating our water and water bodies well. I can bet that we will start living a healthy life.
We all know Water is the most important substance in the world, a necessity utilized by living things for survival but also necessary for several processes. It is our responsibility to prevent it from contamination.
